Think sustainably, act responsibly

GREEN SPACES INSTEAD OF RUINS When a lime and cement plant has been in operation for more than 125 years, its appearance will also have changed. New machines are developed, innovation promotes efficiency, and old equipment has to give way to new. But what do you do with the relics of days gone by? ‟This is exactly the question we asked ourselves at Intercal Austria in Peggau. The abandoned buildings of the old lime works had been crumbling silently for years. In the end, there were just relics of rusty steel, broken glass panes and cracked concrete – unsightly and gray. We launched a renaturation project in Peggau to change all this. As part of it, all buildings that had become unusable were removed by professionals, areas that were still usable were renovated, and the areas that were freed up were greened,” says Robert Schmied, Site Manager in Peggau. Regional partner companies were commissioned for the work. Leading them was demolition company Demolit, headquartered in Graz. More than 1.25 million euros were invested in the renaturation project between 2014 and 2019. The result is impressive. Today, lush green grass is again growing on the once built-up area, providing flora and fauna with a reclaimed habitat. CEMENT & CONCRETE INNOVATION FROM THE INSIDE The Wietersdorfer Group is fully aware that the innovation potential of its more than 2,800 employees is one of the most important factors that help it develop further. This is why the large-scale ‟Great Place to Work” survey is conducted every four years within the Group. New measures and action plans are developed in workshops, based on the results of the employee survey. These can include free influenza vaccination, new break rooms or regular information events about relevant issues. ‟We attach great importance to considering our employees’ suggestions for working continuously on creating a good and appreciative working environment,” explains Birgit Lautner, Head of Human Resources of the Wietersdorfer Group.
