Think sustainably, act responsibly
LIME LIME CONSERVING RESOURCES MORE WOOD DUST, PLEASE! IN ORDER TO MAKE THE PRODUCTION OF QUICKLIME AT INTERCAL AUSTRIA SITE IN PEGGAU MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, THE LIME KILN WAS UPGRADED IN 2019 TO INCLUDE A DEVICE FOR BLOWING IN WOOD DUST AS A SUBSTITUTE FUEL. THIS REDUCES THE AMOUNT OF FOSSIL FUEL USED AND SUSTAINABLY IMPROVES THE CO 2 BALANCE OF THE SITE. The energy required to burn one ton of limestone is 3,600 megajoules. This energy previously came from the combustion of fossil fuels – mainly natural gas and pulverized lignite – injected into the kiln by burner lances. Wood dust can now be blown into the kiln via the modified solids dosing system. The use of wood dust is very environmentally friendly as it is a CO 2 -neutral alternative fuel (RDF: Refuse Derived Fuel). Throughout the entire industry, the use of RDFs is considered a key factor in conserving resources and thus reducing the environmental footprint. ‟It is our goal to reduce the use of fossil fuels in the interests of sustainable production. That’s why the lime kiln uses dust from wood waste that can’t be recycled,” explains Harald Braunecker, Managing Director of Intercal Austria. The final stage of the project should see 100 percent of fuels coming from alternative sources. This represents potential savings of up to 25,000 tons of CO 2 per year.
