SMART TECHNOLOGY With microtunneling, a fully automatic tunnel boring machine digs from an approximately 12 meter-long starting shaft at a depth of 8 to 14 meters to a receiving shaft. The boring machine is pushed forward step by step by hydraulic cylinders. The individual GRP pipe sections are inserted one after the other behind the machine, and so push the pipeline further and further forward. The machine is removed when it reaches the receiving shaft and the pipeline behind it is finished. ENVIRONMENT AND LOCAL RESIDENTS PROTECTED The technology of microtunneling allows the entire construction of a new pipeline between the start and end points to be done out of the sight and mind of the public. This makes it possible to install the pipes under busy roads and in built-up areas without causing traffic congestion, stress or nuisance. This procedure also does away with heavy construction machinery for digging trenches and removing soil, and significantly reduces CO 2 emissions.
