WATER AND RAIL CALCIT, A SPECIALIST MANUFACTURER OF CALCIUM CARBONATE FOR THE PAPER, PLASTICS, PAINT, GLASS, FOOD AND MANY OTHER INDUSTRIES, PLACES A STRONG EMPHASIS ON THE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TRANSPORT OF ITS PRODUCTS. BY SHIFTING FREIGHT FROM ROAD TO RAIL AND, WHERE POSSIBLE, TO WATERWAYS, THE COMPANY HAS SUCCEEDED IN SUSTAINABLY PARING DOWN ONE-THIRD OF ITS CO 2 EMISSIONS. Every month, Calcit ships more than 150,000 tons of calcium carbonate granulate of various sizes from its production sites in Slovenia, Croatia, and the Netherlands. The company has so far shifted 42 percent of the transport volume to rail and nine percent to river barges and ocean vessels in order to move this quantity in the most environmentally friendly way possible. In the past 10 years alone, the amount transported by rail has increased by over 850 percent! ‟The success of freight relocation depends mainly on the customer’s local infrastructure. We are very committed to further increasing the amount of products transported by rail and water in the coming years,” explains Calcit Managing Director, Matevž Kirn. The relocation of several paper customers will enable the company to transfer another 130,000 tons of freight to rail in 2021.
