CEMENT & CONCRETE CLIMATE-NEUTRAL CEMENT PLANT THE SALONIT ANHOVO CEMENT PLANT, ALREADY ONE OF THE MOST MODERN PLANTS IN EUROPE IN TERMS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY, ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT AND EMISSIONS, HAS SET ITSELF THE GOAL OF FURTHER REDUCING ITS CO 2 EMISSIONS. TO DO SO, THE COMPANY WILL RELY ON ALTERNATIVE FUELS, WHICH ARE INTENDED TO REPLACE FOSSIL FUELS IN THE FUTURE. The alternative fuels include plastic fractions, wood, paper and cardboard waste which cannot be recycled as well as waste tyres and small quantities of waste oils. Even today, two-thirds of the thermal energy required at the Anhovo site comes from alternative fuels. This fuel structure enables the company to save 76,000 tons of CO 2 annually compared to the exclusive use of fossil fuels such as coal or petroleum coke. Thanks to the adoption of alternative fuels and ongoing investments in the best available technologies, Salonit Anhovo stands out positively in a Europe-wide comparison. Today, the site ranks amongst the cement plants with the smallest environmental footprint, i.e. the lowest specific CO 2 emissions per ton of cement clinker produced. This means that the proportion of emissions for exactly the same amount of cement produced in Anhovo is 7.2% lower than the emissions of an average European cement plant. ‟The use of alternative fuels and the best available environmental technology is a decisive factor in the fight against CO 2 emissions. We will continue determinedly on our path towards environmentally friendly cement production,” declares Tomaž Vuk, a board member at Salonit Anhovo. The company’s sustainability goals are ambitious: by 2035, the Salonit Anhovo site aims to have developed into a largely climate-neutral cement plant.
